Scope and Contents: This collection consists of video recordings of interviews and community dance activities in eastern Kentucky, southwest Virginia, and east Tennessee recorded at various times between 1988 and 2002. Communities represented in the collection include: Carcassonne and Slade in Kentucky; Dante, Fancy Gap, and Chilhowie in Virginia; and Fall Branch in Tennessee. The three types of Appalachian dance that are documented in the collection include: old-time square dancing, flat-footing and clogging, and two-stepping.
These largely unedited recordings were made by traditional dance scholar Susan Spalding with videographic assistance by the Appalshop organization and Berea College students. The material originated in the process of Spalding’s production, in cooperation with Appalshop, of two the documentaries All Join Hands and Step Back Cindy.
