Abstract
Berea students, faculty, and staff, along with many others, had previously participated in a 1964 march on the state capitol in Frankfort to lobby the Kentucky legislature to pass civil rights legislation.
On March 9,1965, a small group of Bereans took part in a King-led march that had to turn back before arriving at Montgomery—during which a white minister from Boston was killed.
The subsequent four-day march of March 21st through the 24th drew more than 25,000 participants. Fifty-eight Berea College students and faculty members participated, the largest contingent of all Kentucky colleges and universities.
