Abstract
The Appalachian Studies Association was formed in 1977 by a group of scholars, teachers, and regional activists who believed that shared community has been and will continue to be important to those writing, researching, and teaching about Appalachia. First known as the Appalachian Studies Conference, the official name became Appalachian Studies Association in 1984. The Association began to publish The Journal of the Appalachian Studies Association in 1989, printing papers given at annual Association meetings. In 1995 the Association renamed its bi-annual publication The Journal of Appalachian Studies.
