Emily Ann Smith served as a Berea College Faculty member from 1930 until 1986 which included her tenure as secretary to the President, English professor, and Chairman of the English Department.
Smith, a native of Mayfield, KY, graduated from Randolph-Macon Women’s College in 1925 and Columbia Teachers College in 1930. In the summer of 1930, she moved to Berea to assume duties in the English Department as an associate professor. Smith remained a member of the English Department for forty-two years—serving as chairman of the department for the last thirty of those years. In addition to her departmental duties, she served on committees, made several development trips for the college, and delivered many speeches and addresses both on and off campus. After her retirement in 1972, she returned to Berea as Special Assistant to the President. During this time, she authored an update to the college’s history, Berea’s First Century.
