Abstract

The recordings preserve the singing and playing of several dozen musicians mostly from the eastern half of the state. Many of them have since passed on and in several instances the tunes and playing styles documented date well back into the 1800s. Predominant tune sources for the fiddlers recorded include minstrel stage music and the dance music of Britain, Ireland, France, Germany, and in some instances, African American traditions.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection is comprised of two-hundred (200) audio field recordings and eighty eight (88) video recordings of interviews and performances documenting the repertoire and playing styles of several dozen Kentucky fiddlers, banjo players and singers.  The audio and video recordings were made over several years’ time (1970-1990) by John Harrod (b. 1946), an able musician and one of the leading documenters of older style traditional music in Kentucky, particularly its strong fiddle tradition.

Also included in the collection are photographs of performers and a transcript of an  interview of Darley Fulks recorded by John Harrod. (Tapes JH-CT-101-008 / 009).
