Series 1: Correspondence

The first series contains correspondence to and from Chester Young, as well as some correspondence belonging to his parents, spanning the years 1898 to 1993. Two subseries exist within the larger series: Personal Correspondence and Student Correspondence. The arrangement follows Young’s own, original arrangement, resulting in some ordered alphabetically by sender and some ordered chronologically. Materials cover a wide range of topics including personal life, Young’s missionary and pastoral work, education and correspondence with former students, sometimes of a consultative nature. Private correspondence placed in Box 5 has been restricted.

Materials in this series relate to Young’s own education, spanning dates from 1914 to 1966. The series has been divided into four subseries following the chronological order of his education: High school and undergraduate; Southern Baptist Theological Seminary; University of Hawaii; Vanderbilt University. Materials include class notes, research materials, homework, records, tests, papers and information about the schools.

Series 4: Mission Work

This series relates primarily to Young’s work for the Southern Baptist Convention’s Foreign Mission Board in Hawaii and also includes some Kentucky materials connected to mission work. Materials date from 1940-1993 and include records from the FMB; documents concerning conventions, information about the church Young pastored, other missionaries, other religions prevalent in Hawaii and research into religious topics. The series has been divided into six subseries by format and topic: Research and notes, Contract and publication information, Press, Manuscripts, Note cards, Index cards. These have been further divided into subsubseries by manuscript title or subject.

Sub-Series 1: Research and notes

Young collected materials for a variety of projects, including his published materials as well as general interests. This subseries includes notes, correspondence concerning research, photocopies and Photostats of research materials, photographs and negatives. The subseries has been further divided into sub-subseries according to the topic of research.
