Abstract
In 1929 WHAS (Louisville) joined with the University of Kentucky to broadcast university programming and to create “listening centers” throughout eastern Kentucky. Broadcasted programs were educational in nature and included music and agricultural news. Utilizing donated battery-powered radios, the centers enabled citizens of remote areas in eastern Kentucky to receive radio service.
Scope and Contents of the Materials
The records in this collection document the history of radio broadcasting in Kentucky—in particular the delivery of radios and the expansion of radio service and radio programming to communities in Eastern Kentucky through the establishment of Listening Centers by the University of Kentucky, WHAS (Louisville), and other Kentucky radio stations. Records in the collection include unedited transcripts of interviews of individuals discussing the listening centers, the role of radio in the 1937 flood of the Ohio River, WHAS radio (Louisville) programs, and other topics. Also included in the collection are numerous photographs of performers and programming, print materials related to programs, radio promotional materials, news clippings, and correspondence regarding the listening centers and programming.
