Abstract
The Urban Appalachian Council (UAC) 1974-2014, was organized in Cincinnati, Ohio, to act as a regional resource and educational center for Appalachian affairs and to promote pride in cultural heritage among urban Appalachians. Working with and for Appalachian migrants, the UAC was organized to function as both an advocate and a catalyst with a fundamental commitment to the concept of cultural pluralism. Its commitment to cultural pluralism directed the UAC’s work in research, advocacy, community organization, cultural affirmation and program development.
Scope and Contents of the Materials
These are the organizational papers and records of the Urban Appalachian Council of Cincinnati, Ohio. The dates of the documents span from 1930-2012 but predominantly fall between 1967 and 1994. The papers are divided into nine series and include documents concerning Appalachian migration to urban areas and the formation of the UAC, programming and membership records, annual reports, publications and records of the Frank Foster Library and Heritage Room, UAC Board of Trustees board meeting minutes and agendas, materials of UAC directors, papers of UAC staff members, material of UAC committees, materials concerning UAC related agencies, articles, reports and news clippings, on subjects of interest to the UAC mission and programming and about the UAC as well as photographs and audio-visual materials.

Acquisition Method:
The records of the Urban Appalachian Council, 1930-1994, were given to Berea College Special Collection & Archives by deed of gift and were received on June 11, 2010. Additional records were given to the Archives by deed of gift in January of 2013 and June of 2014.

Bradley, College Archivist. The collection opened for research in September 2012. Additional records were included in the collection in January 2013 and July 2015; the finding aid was updated at both these time to show the addition of records.
