Isham B. Chesnut served as the Berea College Forester from 1918-1927.  Born in Hiatt, Rockcastle County, Kentucky in 1882, Chesnut attained teaching certificates from multiple Kentucky counties and was schooled in agricultural practices by Robert Spence before serving as a field agent in West Virginia from 1915 to 1917. In 1916, Chesnut married Matilda Francis Kuster—a Berea student from Redford, Michigan. After his tenure as forester, Chesnut continued to work at the College until 1938 when he went to work for the WPA.  The Chesnuts had two children while living in Berea. Chesnut passed away in 1963 at the age of 81.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

These are the papers of Isham B. Chesnut, Berea College Forester, or forest superintendent, (1918-1927).  Materials include correspondence, work notes, notebooks with notes, teaching certificates, a musical piece, clippings, biographical information written by Chesnut’s son, and materials of Matilda Kuster Chesnut.
